Livestock Risk Protection

Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) is designed to insure against declining market prices. Livestock Policies (excluding lambs) are based on the pricing of certain futures contracts for the applicable livestock and/or the cost of feed. Prices and coverage availability are announced by RMA daily, Monday-Friday (excluding Federal holidays).

Producers may select from a variety of coverage periods and levels that correspond with the time their market weight livestock would be sold and that best align with the risk management strategies for their operation.

  • Sales Period: Monday-Friday (excluding Federal holidays) from about 3:30pm Central Time to 9:00am Central Time the following day
  • Coverage Level: 70-100% of the expected ending value
  • Coverage Period: 13-52 weeks
  • Coverage on up to 1,000 head at a time (2,000/year limit)
  • Coverage for Steers, Heifers, Predominately Brahman, or Predominately Dairy
  • Coverage for up to 900 lb. cattle
  • Producers must own and have possession of the livestock when insurance is purchased
  • Cattle may be sold 30 days before the end of the insurance period or any time after
  • 13% subsidy and premium is due immediately when coverage is applied for

  • Single type of coverage that includes both Steers and Heifers
  • Coverage for 1000-1400 lb. cattle
  • Producers must own and have possession of the livestock when insurance is purchased
  • Insured is required to market cattle (for slaughter) by the end of the insurance period
  • Producer must expect cattle to grade select or higher, with a yield grade of 1 to 3
  • 13% subsidy and premium is due immediately when coverage is applied for
